PROJECT OVERVIEW

DISH Explorer is a second-screen app that combines program-discovery tools, social media engagement and remote-control capabilities on the iPad. By highlighting the most popular programs on TV using real-time TV viewing trends and its integration with Facebook and Twitter, consumers have a more intuitive and social TV experience.

ROLE AND RESPONSIBILITY

I led the overall product UI design effort, which included product structure, wireframing, and visual design. Collaborating closely with contractors, product managers, and the engineering team, I created a new feature look for Dish's app and expanded it across web and set-top box interfaces. The resulting design was cohesive and visually appealing, and effectively conveyed Dish's brand identity and values.

UI DESIGN

When I stared designing, the company asked me to follow Dish’s branding guide line. These guides helped a brand stay recognizable and consistent. However, I didn't let brand guidelines hold back my creativity. I tried to push it a bit and bring in some extra tints and colors (orange and blue), plus I created a modern graphic style that they’d not used before. It was a great approach, and we started to use a dark theme. We kept our mobile app rating above 4.5 on the App Store.

WIREFRAMES AND VISUAL MOCKUPS FOR COMMON SENSE

After successfully implementing the parental control function in the settings, we decided to add Common Sense Media to the media screen. We believed this would be a great match since Common Sense provides education and advocacy to families to promote safe technology and media for children. To ensure seamless integration, we engaged with Common Sense content and worked to minimize the workload for designers and the engineering team while still creating an effective and visually appealing UI.
