Bear Sound Detection System

PROJECT OVERVIEW

Bear SDS provides complete home security in a single, portable, and lightweight device. Bear works by listening to sound waves throughout the entire home, including through walls, and it notifies the renter when a possible breach is detected. Bear SDS is the first Asurion product that we created hardware and software with our brand name on it.

ROLE AND RESPONSIBILITY

Led UX design, including structure, wireframe, visual design, and providing specs for iOS and Android mobile platforms. Created the entire branding of Bear and provided quality art and UX direction to engineers and contractors. Worked closely with Asurion's innovation team consisting of four engineers, an innovation director, and a product manager.

UX DESIGN PROCESS

Based on a market finding with a product manager and director, we brainstormed possible new features and incorporated them into our system. Started the onboarding experience first and expanded to other features. Worked with an agile process that helped quality products, higher productivity, and reduced time-to-market. We kept it simple by bringing focus to the core value of the product for our MVP.

UI DESIGN

The name Bear came from B+Ear because Bear works by listening without video monitoring. It was a unique approach to using a bear figure for brand recognition, and it made the brand more easily identified. Because of our cutting-edge visual direction, we didn't want it to feel like a traditional home security product. Also, provided specs and assets to the engineering team on iOS and Android mobile platforms.

BEAR ALPHA PILOT TEST

We had the Alpha Release of the Bear Sound Detection System last year (2017) for Android mobile and iOS mobile application testing. We identified the following individuals to explore iOS and Android mobile interfaces.

  • Android: Tester 1 (San Francisco)

  • Android: Tester 2 (San Mateo)

  • Android: Tester 3 (San Francisco)

  • iOS: Tester 4 (San Ramon)

  • iOS: Tester 5 (San Jose)

  • iOS: Tester 6 (Foster City)

Test Result

The test results were unexpected, as we identified technical issues between the hub and the application and difficulties in setting up Wi-Fi and Geo-fencing. However, the engineering team and I collaborated to resolve these problems. We updated the UI, and the engineering team implemented changes based on our feedback.

BRANDING GUIDELINE

When we launch Bear SDS, we will also launch a new brand. Creating a strong brand is essential to engaging with customers effectively. A trustworthy brand can inspire loyalty, leading customers to make repeat purchases and become brand advocates.

PACKAGE AND HARDWARE DESIGN

I directed a contractor to move an initial product concept from sketch to final prototyping. We utilized 3D printers to create these prototypes. Additionally, I designed the packaging for Bear and oversaw the entire onboarding experience for our Alpha testers, from unboxing to system setup.
